REVIEW: New Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner Menu at Tangaroa Terrace Tropical Bar & Grill

Now that Tangaroa Terrace has reopened as Tangaroa Terrace Tropical Bar & Grill after an extensive refurbishment, we were anxious to check out the new menu. The restaurant features a breakfast menu from 6:30 AM to 11:00 AM, and a lunch and dinner menu from 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM. Each menu offers a variety of items to choose from and the prices are relatively affordable.

As far as the breakfast menu goes, there appears to be something for everyone. For guests who want something more savory for breakfast, the Breakfast Platter and Breakfast Sandwich are great options. For guests who want something sweeter, the Tangaroa Toast and Pineapple Upside-Down Pancakes are perfect choices. There’s also the Acai Chia Breakfast Bowl for guests who want something a bit lighter and healthier. We opted to try the Pineapple Upside-Down Pancakes.

If you are a fan of pineapples, then you will love these pancakes. Each pancake consists of a large, round piece of pineapple baked into a layer of pancake batter. There are three pancakes in this meal, and while the top pancake was cooked enough, the other two pancakes were very undercooked. We assume this has to do with not wanting to burn the pineapple. However, the pancake batter needed to be cooked for longer in order to be enjoyable. The pancakes could have been warmer, but they came out lukewarm instead of hot. Syrup did enhance the flavor of the pancakes and helped to mask the undercooked taste.

We did, however, really like the bacon. It was cooked to be the right amount of crisp and crunchy. The fresh fruit was good too, but was cut into really small pieces and it honestly looked like it was a day old.

Overall, this wasn’t our favorite breakfast we’ve had at the Disneyland Resort. Next time, we’d rather try the Tangaroa Toast or the Breakfast Sandwich.

The lunch and dinner menu is much larger than the breakfast menu, with a wide variety of options. What we like about this menu is that it offers small meals for guests to eat on their own and larger meals for guests to share. We opted for the Pu Pu Platter, Shipwreck Nachos, and Kalua-Style Poutine.

Pu Pu Platter – $17.00

First, we ordered the Pu Pu Platter which consists of Pork Gyoza, Long Beans, Chili Garlic Edamame, and Sweet-and-Spicy Chicken Wings served with Togarashi Aioli.

The wings were very delicious, but a bit more on the sweet side than the spicy side. It did feel like there was too much sauce, which was very sticky and thick. If these wings had a little less sauce, they would be perfect. We liked that there was a decent amount of meat on each chicken wing.

The Pork Gyoza was very simple and straightforward in taste. We would have preferred them to be a bit warmer, but their size was great and the seasoning on the outside added a good kick of spice to flavor them up. There wasn’t much of a pork taste to them, however.

The Chili Garlic Edamame and Long Beans were the winners of this platter. For guests sensitive to spicy tastes, proceed with caution when enjoying the edamame. They do have a bit of kick, but they are delicious and worth the tongue pain. The Long Beans were light and flavorful, and great both on their own or dipped in the togarashi aioli. This is definitely a snack you could eat endlessly before feeling overly full.

This Pu Pu Platter is a wonderful dish for sharing with others, as an appetizer. With just a couple of changes, we would order this from the menu every time we dine at Tangaroa Terrace.

Shipwreck Nachos – $14.00

Next, we tried the Shipwreck Nachos which are made of Kalua-style Pulled Pork, Pineapple Salsa, Hoisin Sauce, Togarashi Aioli, and Barbecue Sauce.

Where to start? These nachos were incredible and we love that they were loaded with plenty of toppings. The barbecue sauce was a little heavy, though, but the pulled pork helped balance it out. And there was a huge amount of pork, which was shocking considering how little lobster you get with the Lobster Nachos at Lamplight Lounge nowadays. However, the Pineapple Salsa was the star of the show. It added so much flavor to each bite, and the sweetness of the pineapple complemented the pork and the Barbecue Sauce really well.

With the number of different toppings, every bite had a nice surprise to it. We really recommend ordering these nachos; you can’t go wrong with this meal.

Kalua-Style Poutine – $12.00

Last, we tried the Kalua-Style Poutine which consists of Crispy Fries topped with Kalua-style Pork, Cheese Curds, Brown Gravy, Pickled Onions, Fresno Chilis, and Cilantro.

We really wanted to love this poutine, but it was just okay. The fries weren’t warm enough to balance out the cold gravy. We think we would have loved this meal better had it been warmer. The pickled onion wasn’t bad, same with the cheese curds and Fresno chilis. But nothing about this dish this tasted innovative. If we were in the mood for poutine, we would order from somewhere else outside of the Resort.

With a couple tweaks here and there, the new menus at Tangaroa Terrace Tropical Bar & Grill could be really great. There were dishes we loved and dishes we thought needed some work. However, for its first day in operation since being refurbished, we think this is a great start and we can’t wait to see how things improve over time.
