REVIEW: Mickey’s 90th Birthday Celebration Whoopie Pie, Shortbread Cookie, and Trio of Macarons at White Water Snacks

After unveiling a massive celebration cake in honor of Mickey Mouse, Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa is offering even more sweetness. At White Water Snacks, guests can purchase treats featured on Mickey’s 90th Birthday Celebration Cake in the lobby. These treats include Mickey’s Whoopie Pie, Shortbread Birthday Cake Cookie, and a Trio of Celebration Macarons.

Mickey’s Whoopie Pie – $9.00

Oh boy, this whoopie pie is massive. And for $9.00, we think the portion size is fairly decent. Of all the treats, this one is the most decadent and filling, and probably our favorite. The chocolate whoopie pie is rich in flavor, but a tad dry. Despite the dryness of the pie, we loved eating this but could only stomach so much because of the sheer size of it. Together with the frosting and sprinkles, this makes for yummy dessert worth sharing with a friend.

If you’re a whoopie pie-lover or wish to indulge in a rich, chocolatey dessert, this is a good option. But be warned––it’s heavy because of its size and you do need both hands to pick this up.

Shortbread Birthday Cake Cookie – $7.00

This shortbread cookie was probably our least favorite treat and the cost didn’t help. For $7.00, we expected to be blown away by this cookie, but we were very underwhelmed. It’s cute and we love that it takes inspiration from the cake in the lobby of the hotel, but it tasted dry and a little sour. The frosting just didn’t pair well with the shortbread, so it ended up tasting like what we’d imagine playdough tastes like. We would not recommend getting this dessert.

A Trio of Celebration Macarons – $12.00

We love macarons, so we thought this trio of three for $12.00 was adorable, if not a little overpriced. Unfortunately, the Mickey and Minnie macarons are some of the most boring ones we’ve had at the Disneyland Resort. They simply tasted like chocolate and basic buttercream frosting and weren’t interesting beyond how they’re decorated. The yellow macaron was much better as far as consistency and taste. Whereas the Mickey and Minnie macarons were crunchy and not soft at all, the yellow macaron was baked perfectly. The outer shell has that nice crunch while retaining the moist, softness on the inside. It didn’t have any special flavor to it, so it tasted like a standard almond macaron.

If the yellow macaron was sold separately, we’d love it as a dessert. But if you’re thinking about getting this trio, just be warned that Mickey and Minnie aren’t as delicious as they look.

We didn’t completely love these Mickey’s 90th Birthday Celebration Treats, but we do appreciate the effort that White Water Snacks put into their presentation. They are adorable and we love that they’re inspired by the tiered cake on display at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa. If you’re all about indulging on items just for the cute photos, then these are a great choice. But next time, we hope Disney can put out something both cute and delicious.
