Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes have been happening left and right at the Disneyland Resort so far in 2019. Each time we visit, we notice something new being refurbished or enhanced, AKA Project Stardust. And truthfully, it can be hard to keep up with all of the changes. With Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opening in less than two months, we can expect this trend to continue. The latest refurbishment victim? The Downtown Disney District Sign, which has been removed entirely.
For many years, guests walking through the Esplanade to Downtown Disney were greeted by a tall, lit-up sign. Now, that sign has been removed and the ground where it was once firmly planted has been paved over.
If you read our first Weekly Disneyland Resort Maintenance Report, then you’ll recall the above photo from the article. Nearly half of the light bulbs in the Downtown Disney District Sign were burnt out. It appears that instead of replacing the light bulbs, the sign has been removed entirely.
Unfortunately, we can’t say whether it’s gone for good or will be returning with a new and improved look. Only time will tell if the sign is a victim of Project Stardust’s goal to enhance the flow of guests throughout the Resort, or if the sign has been removed for maintenance. Regardless, we miss this icon of Downtown Disney.
