“The Lion King” Live Action Sequel in Development at Disney

It’s the circle of life… and it seems Disney is going back in for another live-action “The Lion King”, this time with a sequel to the 2019 film, to be directed by Barry Jenkins, the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind “Moonlight”.

From Variety:

The movie will be a continuation of the studio’s 2019 photorealistic remake, rather than the 1994 cartoon. Jon Favreau directed the recent reboot to mixed reviews but massive box office receipts; it generated over $1.5 billion at the global box office.

A release date has not been announced for the sequel, which is said to delve into Mufasa’s backstory, as well as the mythology of the characters.

  1. I know the first one was insanely successful but we don’t need this. We didn’t need the first one – it was way too close to the original and it’s not “live action” so what’s the point? Plus Beyonce’s performance was atrocious. At least with the sequel hopefully we’ll get a new story (not like animated The Lion King 2). Hope they don’t run it into the ground like some of the other live action movies.
