It’s no secret that the COVID-19 pandemic has rocked Disney’s film release plans, pushing some films originally planned for theatrical release to instead premiere on Disney+. With the media landscape constantly changing, it seems Marvel Studios is already making plans for any future uncertainties.

According to TheWrap.com, the superhero powerhouse is redesigning its contracts for future projects to reflect possible release strategy changes. A studio insider tells Umberto Gonzalez that “under the new contract language, key above-the-line talent like actors, writers, directors and producers will receive adjusted compensation depending on whether the film opens in theaters or debuts on the Disney+ streaming service.” Gonzalez adds that Marvel’s typical contracts for key talent include bonuses on the backend that are tied to their film’s box office returns. It’s expected that the first film to utilize the new contracts will be Black Panther II, which recently confirmed reports that the role of T’Challa will not be recast following the passing of star Chadwick Boseman.

It should also be noted that the pandemic has also prompted Disney to debut movies in theaters and on Disney+ simultaneously with “Premier Access.” The live-action remake of Mulan was the first release to utilize this strategy back in September, while it was announced at Disney’s Investor Day that this will also be done for Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Raya and the Last Dragon beginning March 5th. It’s likely that these new contracts will also provide some compensation for films released in this manner.
