California Governor Tosses Tiered Reopening Plan, Announces Economy May “Full Reopen” by June 15

As the COVID-19 vaccine becomes available to more California residents, the state is tossing out the tiered reopening plan and moving forward with a new one.

Governor Gavin Newsom has announced that the state may “fully reopen its economy” on June 15 provided two criteria are met:

  • If vaccine supply is sufficient for Californians 16 years and older who wish to be inoculated
  • If hospitalization rates are stable and low

If these are met, “everyday activities will be allowed and businesses can open with common-sense risk reduction measures.” Face mask mandates will still be in place. While reopening was previously dependant on case numbers in individual counties, this new plan will see the entire state reopen at once.

California has currently administered over 20 million vaccine doses.
