It seems that Cruella de Ville, our favorite malevolent fashion icon, has won many hearts with her evil-doings, polished style and sympathetic backstory. After a rough turn for movie theaters during the pandemic, Cruella showed serious box office success in conjunction with a relatively high viewership on Disney+. In North America the film grossed $26.5 million after opening over Memorial Day weekend. Additionally, the film currently has an audience score of 97% on RottenTomatoes. This could propel Cruella into the highest ranks of Disney live-action adaptations featuring classic animated stories.

The renewed interest in movie theater-going, and the success of the film, seems to have inspired Disney to get the ball rolling on a sequel. Reportedly the studio has already begun the process of developing a second film which further explores the exploits of the stylish villain. Word has it that director Craig Gillespie and screenwriter Tony McNamara will likely return for the sequel as well.
Disney has found success adapting other beloved animated films into live-live action reimaginings. This will continue with projects such as Pinocchio and Peter Pan & Wendy.
