Disney to Release First Look at Inspiration for ‘The Princess and the Frog’ Attraction on August 23

Disney reportedly commissioned New Orleans-based artist Sharika Mahdi to create a collection of paintings to inspire the Imagineers behind the upcoming retheming of Splash Mountain to “The Princess and the Frog.” According to Central Florida journalist Ashley Carter, Disney plans to share the first look at one of the paintings on August 23.

The reimagining of Splash Mountain was announced in 2020 as part of a series of ongoing inclusivity changes at the Disney Parks. The attraction will be rethemed to “The Princess and the Frog” at both the Magic Kingdom and Disneyland.

No timeline has been set for the retheme, but the Magic Kingdom Vice President recently confirmed that the plan is still in development.

    • It makes about the same amount of sense as putting an attraction based on a film set in Georgia in a land based on the American frontier… continuity of theme and sight lines of competing thematic styling were thrown out back in the late 80s.

  1. This is still my least favorite decision by Disney lately. I hope this stalls in development long enough for Disney to realize most park goers love the ride and do not have a problem with it. Look at the line wait times! I see blacks, whites, asians, etc. every time I am in line. If no one rode it or no one bought the merchandise because it was unpopular then by all means, change. But to change a popular ride from people that arent regular park goers is idiocy! Change Disneyland if it isnt as popular out there, but leave Disney World alone please!!

  2. “ The new painting will be the first insight into the future attraction since the concept art was revealed”

You forgot to add, “ and at least half of the ideas presented in the art will be removed due to budget cuts. “

  3. how woke! no reason to change a classic, maybe they could change one of the two splash mountains & leave the other one alone! like tower of terror. that way the snowflakes & real disney fans could choose one or the other!

    • Hey David, why do you hate Walt Disney? “Disneyland will never be completed. It will continue to grow as long as there is imagination left in the world.” – Walt Disney

You’re not a good fan. Shame on you.

  4. Just dont do this. I will never go on this ride. Its just the point. CEO has to go. Be a Walt fan not a Disney fan until things change. Sucks man

    • Literally: “Disneyland will never be completed. It will continue to grow as long as there is imagination left in the world.” – Walt Disney

Also, are you not aware of how much has changed at Disney parks? They are completely different from forty years ago. Chill.

  5. The change was totally unnecessary and ridiculous. Shame on y’all. I see WHY Disney thinks this is the way to go, as they won’t release Song of the South because of racism, so the characters are ones kids don’t know, never will know. But their parents might, and grandparents might, and isn’t Disney for EVERYONE?? Not just kids?? What a waste of money, and Disney, you’re already taking quite the losses already…you SURE spending all this money you don’t have coming in is wise??? Leave Splash Mountain alone. This “woke” crap is absurd. Not to mention a wonderfully ignorant display of misuse of the English language…….. It’s ruining everything.

  6. Yeah, because a Louisiana Swampland themed ride will fit real well into a land that literally has an entirely frontier theme and is called Frontierland. Because you know, we see swamps out in the frontier all the time. This is ridiculous.

BTW – I am born and raised in Louisiana.
