Disney on Broadway Gives Thanks to Understudies and Crew Members for Successful Return to the Stage

The Disney on Broadway official Instagram account posted a photo, just recently, thanking understudies and crew members for their dedication and hard work.

Disney on Broadway stated, “When the stories are written about the return of Broadway they must reflect the extraordinary talent, courage and spirit of our Swings, Understudies, Standbys, Alumni, Dance Captains, Stage & Company Management, Musicians, Crew, Subs and all the unsung heroes who make the impossible possible every day.

To each of you who has jumped on an airplane, learned a track at half hour and filled the critical space that allows our shows to continue on Broadway, on Tour and around the world we are deeply grateful to you for your contribution. We stand in awe and deep appreciation.”

There could be many reasons why an understudy would need to fill in for a role on Broadway. But understudies and crew members are especially important right now during the COVID-19 pandemic, as an understudy could need to fill in at any given moment.

This statement by Disney also seems to be in response to Broadway League President Charlotte St. Martin’s comments about the lack of “experienced” understudies and swings in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter. Martin has since apologized for her comments.

After being shut down for a year and a half, Broadway shows, including the incredible “The Lion King,” made their return to the stage this past September.
