Disney ‘Taking a Different Approach’ to Seven Dwarfs in Live-Action Snow White Film

Earlier this week, actor Peter Dinklage criticized Disney for making a new live-action “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” because of the historical depiction of “dwarfs” in the story. Disney has since responded to the comments.

Dinklage said on the Marc Maron podcast WTF, “I was a little taken aback when they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White… You’re still telling the story of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” Take a step back and look at what you’re doing there. It makes no sense to me. You’re progressive in one way and you’re still making that f*cking backwards story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together. What the f*ck are you doing man? Have I done nothing to advance the cause from my soapbox?”

A Disney spokesperson told Deadline yesterday, “To avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community. We look forward to sharing more as the film heads into production after a lengthy development period.”

The live-action “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” has been in development since 2016. Rachel Zegler will star as Snow White and Gal Gadot was in negotiations to play the Evil Queen. Andrew Burnap has been cast as a new male lead. Mark Platt will produce the film, while Marc Webb is set to direct. Benj Pasek and Justin Paul will create original songs for the film.

  1. This article really starts to make me wonder who is actually causing more damage to the Disney brand; is it the new era of Chapek management, social media or maybe just imbeciles in our society who actually listen/care about what Peter Dinklage says? Yup, definitely our society, the inmates are running the asylum and Disney believes they have to acquiesce. For the record one of the most horribly stereotyped character in recent years was Ray from Princess and the Frog…in case you forgot take a look. Thoughts?

    • People have different opinions and times have changed. That is what I’ve been told. Still you can try and write a letter to Disney about it if yoy truly feel that way. I would do that.

  2. I can name at least one person who not only listened to what Peter Dinklage said, but cared enough about it to mention it in a comment thread. However, I won’t be so quick to call that person an imbecile for the “crime” of having an opinion in a forum that only occasionally resembles civil discussion these days.

  3. He’s not wrong but he’s not right either. I am Latina and cannot imagine being cast as Snow White. Why not cast a German actress to give authenticity? I’m so confused on why society needs us to feel “progressive” by choosing a different minority than what the storyline originally had just because the original country is racially white? South American actors voiced Encanto. Beautiful! Can you imagine the outrage if Disney chose a different “progressive” minority to voice them? Make it make sense.
