A series based on the 2011 film “Real Steel” is in the early stages of development for Disney+, Variety reports.

“Real Steel” was based on the 1956 short story “Steel” by Richard Matheson. It takes place in the near future (2020) where human boxers have been replaced with giant robots. Hugh Jackman starred in the film as a former boxer who fixed up a robot from a junkyard with his son.

It’s unknown if the “Real Steel” series would follow the film or go in a different direction. According to ScreenRant last year, the film’s director Shawn Levy said he and Jackman have discussed doing a sequel. It’s not confirmed if Jackman would appear in the series.

No writer is attached but Levy will executive produce the series via 21 Laps. Robert Zemeckis and Jack Rapke of Compari Entertainment will also executive produce, as well as Jacqueline Levine, and Susan Montford and Don Murphy of Angry Films. It will be produced by 20th Television.

Matheson’s “Steel” was also adapted into a 1963 “The Twilight Zone” episode of the same name.
