Harrison Ford to Replace the Late William Hurt as Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross in Marvel’s ‘Captain America: New World Order’

Harrison Ford has officially been named to replace the late William Hurt as General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross in the upcoming Marvel film, “Captain America: New World Order.” Last week, Jeff Sneider, Film Critic and Columnist for Los Angeles Magazine, tweeted, “We’re hearing Harrison Ford HAS, in fact, been cast as Gen. Thunderbolt Ross.”

Hurt, who died from complications of prostate cancer this past March, was originally scheduled to reprise his role.

Ford will join Anthony Mackie, who is reprising his role as Sam Wilson from the Captain America and Avengers franchise, as well as Disney+’s “The Falcon and the Winter Solider” TV mini-series.

The film’s plot, which is the 34th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is still a secret.  It is also the fourth film set in Marvel’s Phase 5.

Also scheduled to appear in “Captain America: New World Order” is Tim Blake Nelson as Samuel Sterns/The Leader, Danny Ramirez as Joaquin Torres/Falcon, Carl Lumbly as Isaiah Bradley, and Shira Haas as Sabra.

Deadline reports that Falcon creator Malcolm Spellman has written New World Order along with the show’s staff writer Dalan Musson, and will produce alongside Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige.

Although Ford has appeared in other Disney franchise films most notably “Star Wars” and “Indiana Jones,” this will be the first time he’s appeared in a Marvel film.

The Hollywood Reporter states that the upcoming film, which is expected to be released on May 3, 2024, will take place after the events of 2021’s Marvel Disney+ series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.”

  1. Has it been confirmed if they are writing the Actor Change into the script? For example, Thunderbolt Ross is title/moniker rather than just a person.
Or will they just ignore the casting change like in Iron Man; ie: War Machine. Terrance Howard to Don Cheadle.
Or Fantastic Beasts; ie Johnny Depp to Madds Mickelson
